A new grade separated interchange was required over the existing dual carriageway to alleviate the risk to vehicles turning right across the central reserve, due to increased traffic volumes on the A90. The new junction incorporates a 45 m overbridge, together with 5.4 km of slip roads and associated side roads.
Seven central reserve crossing points were closed and two diverging access roads upgraded as part of the works. Five large culverts were also required to carry the side roads over the deep field ditch system on the flat alluvial plain.
The junction is landscaped to provide 1:5 slopes to the main elevations to reduce the visual impact on the surrounding environment.
