Hitchin flyover open
The new Hitchin flyover opened to rail traffic six months ahead of schedule. This successful early completion is attributed to the good working relationships fostered by the Hitchin Alliance: Client, Network Rail in partnership with Contractor, Hochtief (UK) and their designer, Tony Gee. The scheme included detailed design of a new 850m long grade-separated junction which carries trains over the main line.
The new viaduct will improve performance and capacity on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) by relieving the main bottleneck at the Junction where the trains between London and Cambridge had previously had to cut across three of its lines.
The team has also worked hard to involve the community in the project. At a recent open day, nearly 900 people were shown around the site, and the Alliance raised £4500 for local charities.
The success of the collaborative approach was recognised at the recent Network Rail Partnership Awards where the scheme won the Best Collaboration prize.
