BCIA Success for Singapore Sports Hub

Tony Gee’s run of award success continued with the Singapore Sports Hub winning the Temporary Works (Civil Engineering) prize at the British Construction Industry Awards 2014 held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The award category was introduced at the 2014 awards to recognise that temporary works form a vital but often overlooked part of any construction project.

Tony Gee was engaged by Yongnam Engineering and Construction for the construction engineering and temporary works design of the fixed roof erection for the new 55,000 seat multi-purpose National Stadium. The project posed some unique challenges in terms of the height of the arch above the playing surface, the weight bulk of the critical components, the complexity in making connections in highly irregular 3-D trusses, the movements that occurred during assembly and the methods needed to ensure the steelwork was in the correct location at the end of construction.

The judges commented that ‘a full understanding of complex geometry and stress state on a daunting scale was only the starting point for this exemplar demonstration of temporary works expertise.’
