Wallbridge Lock earns High Commendation

Wallbridge Lock received a high commendation at the ICE South West Awards

Wallbridge Lock was highly commended in the Under £3m category at the ICE South West Awards.

Wallbridge Lock was restored after becoming disused following a partial collapse. Working with Stroud District Council (SDC), Tony Gee stabilised the lock through an innovative design involving a series of steel columns recessed into the lock walls. This design allowed construction to be completed safely to a tight deadline to not interfere with the fish spawning season and allowed SDC to begin the next phase of works.

The judges of the award were particularly impressed that such heavy civil engineering was completed within a limited budget, with the practical solution retaining the heritage of the lock.

The lock was opened by Prince Charles during a ceremony earlier this year, who cut the ribbon during a boat ride through the canal.
