Civil and Railway Engineering Technician Apprentices

As an apprentice at Tony Gee, you’ll be in regular contact with the Learning and Development Manager, whilst being assigned a mentor who will guide you through your professional development. This is an incomparable opportunity to put your creativity and imagination to the test, working on inspiring and complex projects across the UK, and providing technical support to consulting engineers across the business. Workload is divided between the design of permanent works, the development of temporary works and construction methodology together with design of any specialist equipment necessary to build the structure. Projects could vary between sectors including rail, bridge and building construction, marine, highway, aviation, power, commercial and industrial.

The apprenticeship will run over a two year period during which you will undertake a supervised programme of training and college day release, which leads to Technician Membership of a relevant professional Institution. There is the opportunity to go onto further study, enabling you to be qualified to HNC and/or degree level and achieve higher professional status.

Job Responsibilities

  • Production of CAD drawings
  • Preparation of calculations
  • Supporting the administration of projects
  • Ensuring outputs meet the required standards
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Maintaining drawing register
  • Working as a cooperative member of the team
  • Contributing solutions to problems
  • Working both in an office environment and on site

Personal Qualities and Required Skills

  • Minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above achieved (or equivalent such as Scottish Standard Grade, or junior certificate in Ireland), which must include English and Maths. Maths must be at Grade B or above.
  • Desire to work in a consulting civil engineering environment and forge a career in Civil Engineering with an ambition to achieve professional qualification e.g. EngTech
  • Show an aptitude for software based engineering and drawing – e.g. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other similar 3D software
  • Committed, dedicated and self-motivated
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written
  • Ability to demonstrate high attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively and laterally
  • Ability to be efficient and resourceful with workload and prioritise tasks accordingly to meet deadlines
