Structural engineering consultants Tony Gee provided specialist technical engineering design services to the extension of the East London Line.
The underground section of the new line included the central stations between Whitechapel to the north and Surrey Quays to the south. Tony Gee was responsible for the complete design for this section of the project amounting to approximately 50% of the total design work.
All five stations (excluding Canada Water) were fully refurbished to provide facilities compatible with those in the new stations. The stations required new emergency exits, which created different challenges at each station. At Wapping, the emergency exit had to be formed in new circular shafts sunk into water bearing gravels, with adits through the temporary works used by Brunel in the construction of the original vent shaft walls.
