Tony Gee was appointed to act as lead design consultant for the construction of two railway underbridges as part of the Rugeley Eastern Bypass scheme. The route of the new Bypass is on the River Trent’s flood plain and passes below two railway lines on high embankments.
Following early consultation with the main project stakeholders, Tony Gee completed the detailed design of all permanent and temporary works required for installation of the new bridge.
The underbridges were initially constructed off-line adjacent to the railway. Following the excavation of up to 20,000 m³ of embankment fill, the structures were each slid into position as single units. The bridges presented differing structural forms, however to maximise replication of insallation methods and simplify construction, the design duplicated temporary work components.
