Contractor:
Giken Group
End Client:
Multiplex

Tony Gee was commissioned to undertake the design of a sheet pile retaining wall for Cardiff St David’s 2, a shopping centre development with a two-storey basement.

The design work for the temporary and permanent conditions included temporary tie bars, ground anchors, temporary waling beams and props.

One unusual aspect was that the piles were designed to support vertical loads from the edge columns of the building above in addition to the horizontal ground and ground water loads.

Due to the close proximity of a tunnel carrying telephone lines to Ireland to the basement, Tony Gee undertook a finite element analysis to understand the effects the new basement would have on this key structure.
