The Tay estuary has strong tidal currents exceeding six knots, and the navigation spans are subject to cross currents and a direction change for navigational transit. The Tay Road Bridge Joint Board has commissioned Jacobs to design piled pier collision protection islands for an ECI contract awarded to VolkerStevin.

Tony Gee supported the design with construction advice and design of temporary works concept, sequences and heavy lifting and support equipment. Scope included redesign of three pier islands at 300t precast shells to be supported on piles for in-situ concreting in three lifts, with associated temporary works.
