The Umfolozi Bridge consists of ten simply supported spans of proprietary truss bridging which cross the River and its flood plain. Each span is approximately 47.3m long and has a heavily skewed end. The bridge carries a single track of railway for the transport of heavy freight.
Some ten years after installation, a failure occurred in a bracing member, and the detailed survey which followed discovered other partially failed members.
Tony Gee was retained to investigate this well tried and tested bridging system to discover the source of the troubles in this particular location. The brief was subsequently extended to the recommendation of remedial action to be taken to repair the damage and avoid its reoccurrence.
