Until the opening of St Pancras, the Channel Connection at Waterloo provided the London terminus for high-speed trains from Paris to Brussels. Tony Gee was retained to design the Departures Hall, Track and Platform Support Structures. The resulting reinforced concrete structure was designed by an integrated team that liaised with a wide range of stakeholders including Lambeth Council.

A key element to the success of this project was the securing of rapid approvals and permissions from the wide range of public and private bodies affected by the works, including the Council who had particular streetscape standards that they required to be applied to the environs of the station.
