The former kitchen and dining facilities at the Abbey School comprised post-war prefabricated buildings which were in a poor state of repair. Tony Gee acted as structural designers for the new building, providing not only kitchens and a dining/utility hall, but also IT and conference facilities.
The frame is a hybrid of steel and glued laminated timber members. The roof comprises an inner structural liner with a standing seam top sheet. The acoustically absorbent liner is designed to span the primary timber members and act as a stressed skin, to obviate the need for purlins or roof bracing. This gives a clean and simple appearance to the roof, which will be exposed, thus saving the cost of further finishes.
