Corus Steelworks, Project Scorpio

Scunthorpe, UK

Tony Gee undertook the civil, structural and geotechnical design for the foundations and three associated buildings for an extension to the Corus steelworks at Scunthorpe.

Working for Norwest Holst (part of VINCI PLC), the £9.7m contract was let by Danieli Davy Distington, contracted to Corus to supply a new continuous steel casting mill. The scheme comprised design and construction of extensive reinforced concrete foundations within a contiguous piledcofferdam in preparation for the extension.

The foundations include a basement excavation up to 21m deep spanning some 18m wide with no internal propping.

The basement retaining walls comprise 1200mm diameter contiguous piles, supported both in the temporary and permanent conditions by ground anchors at capping beam level.

In addition Tony Gee completed the heavy foundation design for the plant and building works.
