Dungeness B Flood Defence Feasibility

Following the 2011 Japanese earthquake and subsequent nuclear incident, a high level flood risk assessment was carried out throughout the EDF Energy UK nuclear fleet. Tony Gee was appointed to carry out a high level feasibility study for flood defence options to the perimeter of Dungeness B power station. The study was to assist with EDF Energy’s safety case for continued operation of Dungeness B.

The study identified various options to provide flood protection. These were assessed against Safety Assessment Principles and included a cost and duration analysis.

The feasibility study evolved into additional works to carry out a site permeability assessment and works associated with this. Once the feasibility study and permeability assessments were completed, Tony Gee was appointed to design the chosen flood defence system.

A permeability assessment was required for the Additional Feed System building at Dungeness B. The assessment was local to the building to ascertain the potential impact pressures on the building foundations during a flood event and was an extension of the aforementioned permeability assessment. This assessment identified potential mitigation measures for significant risk areas.
