Hong Kong-Zhuhai –Macau Bridge

Strategic overview of reclamation Advise, review and guide design on the reclamation for the Boundary Crossing facilities
End Client:
Hong Kong Highways Department

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is actually a series of bridges and tunnels, 50 kilometres in length that will connect the west side of Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai.

The project includes provision of cargo and passenger facilities that will be situated on a new 130 hectare site located offshore on reclaimed land north-east of Hong Kong’s International Airport. Tony Gee was invited to join the Arup-led team on the strength of our specialist reclamation experience.

Unlike the adjacent reclamation scheme for the airport, the deep deposits of soft marine clays were not dredged in all areas due to environmental reasons. We produced a geotechnical report for submission to Hong Kong’s Highways Department outlining the strength and settlement characteristics of the soft marine clays. These parameters formed the basis of the settlement analyses that were vital to ensure that strict performance requirements could be achieved.
