Tony Gee was retained by Cleveland Bridge UK to undertake construction engineering for the stadium south roof and the detailed design of associated temporary works.

This iconic 90,000 seat stadium is a highly complex building and comprises a 325m span tubular arch, leaning at an angle of 110° from which the roof is supported via a series of cables. A retractable roof section provides shelter for spectators whilst allowing sunlight to the pitch.

The delicate balance between arch weight and roof weight, the extensive use of cables in the bowstring trusses and the stipulation for a stress-free construction all contributed to complicated erection analysis and a demanding construction process. Roof segments were positioned on extensive temporary works before being connected during several difficult jacking operations.

We continued involvement in the project for Hollandia, performing independent checks of the temporary works and providing representation on site and in Hollandia’s design office.
