In order to accommodate Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, a new Visual Control Room (VCR) Tower was needed as the original tower could not meet the increased demand. The new £50m steel control tower, which is located near Terminal 3, is 87 m high and offers controllers a 360-degree view of the entire airport and features the latest in air traffic technology.
Tony Gee completed a review of the construction engineering for the erection of the new tower. The tower itself consists of a three storey base build, an 18-storey tubular steel mast and the equivalent of a five-storey building on top of the mast, which is known as the cab.
